Santa Cruz, 2017

Santa Cruz investigates California’s hedonisms, privileged liberalism and aspirational conflicts, riffing on the state’s condition 50 years after the publication of Didion’s prescient 1967 essay Slouching Towards Bethlehem.  Santa Cruz, a college town sitting at the nexus of Silicon Valley, skateboard culture, surf legacy, and alternative lifestyle, embodies specific cross-currents of contemporary Californian culture.  Illustrated by internet images, this seemingly personal account questions the role of memory, representational veracity and fixity in the digital age.  A comedy of spermbots, witches and Teslas, Santa Cruz contributes to the long legacy of literature which documents a uniquely Californian state of mind.
